Clubs vs. Teams vs. Programs

If your high school offers a variety of sports, such as football, track, tennis, etc., each of these sports is part of a program. Each program has a team. Each team plays in a league (often called a conference, and part of a district).

For example, your school might have a girls basketball program, which refers to the coach, funds, equipment, insurance, etc. Once a group of students sign up to play, you have a basketball team. You play other schools in an interschool league.

Where Does Pickleball Fit In?

Since pickleball is not an official high school sport in most states, it will start out as a club, just like the chess or math or debate clubs. Once you set up your club, then you can recruit players and set up a team.

You can create multiple teams and play intraschool (or intramural) school pickleball matches, or you can form an interschool league and invite other schools to compete against your club and play matches against your school.

In our Resources section, we have links to articles on starting a pickleball club, then creating a team of players.
