There Is No Governing Body of High School Pickleball

There cannot be a governing body of high school pickleball because high school sports are governed by their state interscholastic sports organizations. These state organizations do not need to, and never will, recognize a national body that attempts to “govern” them.

State interscholastic sports organizations all set their own rules.

For example, high school soccer rules in one state might require coaches to have no contact with their players 30 days before the season starts, while another state might mandate that the no-contact rule is 60 days. High school tennis in one state might allow eight-game pro sets, no-ad scoring or third-set tie-breaks, while in another state, all matches must use regular scoring and three-set matches.

No national “governing body” of high school baseball or high school tennis has any say in these rules. Not even the USOC or USTA have any say over how high school baseball or tennis are played.

USA Pickleball is the governing body of pickleball in the U.S. For example, USAP decides who is on the U.S. Olympic pickleball team. USAP cannot, however, tell high schools in Alabama how many lines of singles and how many lines of doubles their matches must include.

The USHSPA is a voluntary organization and a federation of independent state high school pickleball organizations, helping them better communicate and share information.
